Art & Technology Now – Nature Draws, Technology Mediates

From November 7 to 22, 2026, media artist Naoko Tosa presents a solo exhibition in the Hall of Light on the first floor of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. Admission is free.
Spanning approximately forty years, the exhibition connects An Expression (1985), listed in The Museum of Modern Art’s collection, with the newly unveiled Tosa Rinpa: Spirit Resonance series. Sound, vibration, air, gravity, and fluid motion generate forms that are captured through high-speed imaging and developed across moving image, gold-ground works, folding screens, and glass.
At a moment when the word “generation” is increasingly associated with generative AI, Tosa’s practice offers a longer and different history. Since the 1980s, she has explored how images emerge through the interaction of body, sound, natural phenomena, artificial life, and cultural computing.
Rather than depicting nature, Tosa creates the conditions in which nature produces the image. The camera becomes not merely a recording device, but an instrument that takes the place of the brush. The exhibition asks whether Japanese painting can be renewed through media art without relying on the conventional act of painting.
