ZENetic Computer
2003–2004
Created during Tosa’s time at MIT. A work reconstructing sansui and Zen as an interactive system, and an important work that consciously foregrounds Japanese culture as its theme.

Sound of Ikebana

A representative work crystallizing Tosa’s long-running exploration of the relationship between sound and image.

A video work created by freezing ikebana with liquid nitrogen and filming the shattering process in high speed, visualizing the beauty of decay and the transient nature of things.

Noh: Izutsu
2023
A 17-minute video performance work that merges the visual vocabulary of Noh Izutsu and Sound of Ikebana, presenting an unprecedented new form of yūgen as an emotional expression for the shite. A late core work in which Tosa’s expression of yūgen intersects with her long-standing research on sound, image, body, and time.

Exhibition basis: “Zeami Noh: Izutsu” was presented at East Hawai‘i Cultural Center’s “Reconceptualizing Traditions in Japanese Theater” in 2023–2024. Critical and institutional basis: positioned as a work that connects the visual expression of Sound of Ikebana to the Noh play Izutsu and presents a new form of yūgen through the emotional expression of the shite.
